Description

What Everyone Knows About Britain* (*Except the British) examines a change in attitudes towards this country and the forces underlying it. In eight pacy chapters, Peel looks at how Britain may seem a mess from the inside but looks even more chaotic from the outside. The established political order, the nation’s systems and self-image are crumbling – and we don’t know what the future holds.

Peel addresses issues many may shy away from, asking the tough questions and looking at lessons to be learned so that we can do things better. His ability to summarise the issues (and suggest ways to dig ourselves out of the hole we’re in) makes this a lively, positive and, above all, hopeful read.

Michael Peel first joined the Financial Times in 1997. Since then, he has worked as a foreign correspondent and been posted in West Africa, the Middle East, South-East Asia and Europe. He is the recipient of awards from bodies including the UK Foreign Press Association and his work has appeared in outlets such as the London Review of Books and The Times Literary Supplement. Michael Peel has appeared on the BBC, Sky and other media platforms. He is the author of two previous books, A Swamp Full of Dollars (shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and longlisted for The Orwell Prize) and The Fabulists.
