Description

AI has already infiltrated our day-to-day lives, through language-generating chatbots like ChatGPT and social media. Everyday lives are linked by their unexpected encounters with artificial intelligence. But it’s also affecting us in more insidious ways. It touches everything from our interpersonal relationships to our kids’ education, work, finances, public services, and even our human rights.

In Code Dependent Madhumita Murgia shows us how automated systems are reshaping our lives all over the world, from technology that marks children as future criminals to an app that is helping to give diagnoses to a remote tribal community. By highlighting the voices of ordinary people Code Dependent explores the impact of a set of powerful and often exploitative technologies on individuals and wider society.

Madhumita Murgia is an award-winning journalist, editor and speaker with expertise in the fields of technology, science and health. She is the first Artificial Intelligence Editor of the Financial Times and has been writing about AI, for Wire and the FT, for over a decade. Code Dependent is her first book.

Joining the conversation is writer and entrepreneur Azeem Azhar.

Azeem Azhar has worked in the tech industry for 30 years and is an internationally-recognised technology researcher and advisor. In 2015, he founded Exponential View, a trends-oriented interdisciplinary research group focussing on the impact of AI. He is a visiting fellow at Oxford University and Harvard Business School looking at the impact of AI in companies, and he co-chairs the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council on complex risks. His first book, Exponential, published in 2021, explores the underlying drivers of the wholesale transition to the Exponential Age, and its impacts on our near future.

Ticket price includes a glass of wine or a soft drink.
