An event with

Helen Garner in conversation with Rachel Cooke

Celebrating the work of Helen Garner

Tuesday 28th May 2024 at 7:00pm

Daunt Books Marylebone

Tickets £10.00

Description

Daunt Books is so proud to announce a very special event with an essential writer.

Helen Garner is one of those extraordinary authors who generates a fierce devotion in her readers; her work is simply unforgettable. Yet, despite Helen Garner being widely recognised as one of Australia’s greatest living writers, many of her books have long been unavailable in the UK.

We are so lucky that, this year, her novels and non-fiction have recently been republished by Wiedenfeld & Nicolson, and this event will celebrate the new publications, each one with a new introduction from an admiring writer. There are more titles to follow but on this evening Helen will be discussing two novels: Monkey Grip and The Children’s Bach, and her non-fiction book This House of Grief.

The Children’s Bach is a sparkling family novel set against the bohemian underground of 1980s Melbourne.

Monkey Grip is the novel that Helen Garner is best known for – a look at the doomed infatuations of a young, single mother, enthralled by the excesses of late-70s counterculture.

This House of Grief is an engrossing true-crime classic that follows a man and his broken life, a community wracked by tragedy, and the long and torturous road to closure.

Helen will be in conversation with journalist, critic and author Rachel Cooke. Rachel wrote the new introduction to This House of Grief, and is the author of Her Brilliant Career, published by Virago.

Ticket price includes a glass of wine or a soft drink.
