The journalist and writer Tom Parfitt joins us to open the Daunt Books Festival 2024 and discuss his breath-taking travelogue High Caucasus. This was a real firm favourite amongst booksellers here last year, so don’t miss the chance to hear about Tom’s remarkable 1,000 mile walk through Russia’s wild and epic Caucasus region.
After witnessing the Beslan school siege in 2004, whilst working as a correspondent, Tom was left emotionally shredded; struggling to find a way to return to his life in Moscow. Having always been fascinated by the mountainous North Caucasus, Tom turned to his love of walking as a source of recuperation and an attempt to find greater understanding of the roots of violence in a region whose fate has tragic parallels with the Ukraine of today.
High Caucasus is a stunning memoir of confronting trauma through connection with history, people and place.
The wonderful Viv Groskop joins Tom in conversation. Viv Groskop is a British award-winning writer, comedian, broadcaster and performance coach. She is the author many acclaimed books, including Lift As You Climb, The Anna Karenina Fix, Au Revoir Tristesse and Happy High Status.
