Thomas Hegghammer‘s new book, The Caravan, is a compelling biography of Abdullah Azzam, the Palestinian cleric who led the mobilization of Arab fighters to Afghanistan in the 1980s and played a crucial role in the internationalization of the jihadi movement. Killed in mysterious circumstances in 1989, Azzam remains one of the key jihadi idealogues of all time.

Frank Gardner, the BBC’s Secuity Correspondent, will be chatting to Thomas about the book. He is also the bestselling author of action-packed espionage thrillers Crisis and Ultimatum and we eagerly expect Outbreak later this year.

Thomas Heghammer is Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment.
