Description
We were thrilled to see the reissue of Maurice Gorham’s delightful book Back to the Local last year. A poignant and funny ode to the British pubs, this new edition features a handy guide to the pubs which still stand today. It’s a surprising amount and some of the best ones are just round the corner from our shop!
To celebrate this reissue, the publisher John Seaton has conceived of a walking pub tour, which will take in some of the pubs mentioned. Let John be your guide to the pubs; taking you back in time and celebrating them as they are today.
John describes himself as an old publishing hand. Now retired, he worked in the business for fifty-one years. He mainly worked in backlist publishing. His main stints were at Penguin Books, Faber, and Canongate. At Faber he set up the print-on-demand list Faber Finds. It was in that list that Back to the Local was first reissued. John first came across the book in a second-hand bookshop in Berwick upon Tweed in the mid-1980s. Beyond appearing on the back cover of Faber’s 2024 reissue of Back to the Local his greatest pleasure has been rediscovering forgotten books and giving them a new life.
Please meet at the bookshop for 1.30pm, where John will give a short talk before setting off on the walk. The walk will take in 3 pubs, finishing at 3pm at the Jackalope.
