Description

Julia Blackburn and Hugh Brody are two of our most distinctive, sensitive and original writers. We are thrilled to host a conversation between them, in which they will be discussing their latest books, both of which are a blend of memoir, travel writing and anthropology.

Julia Blackburn’s ‘Dreaming The Karoo’ is a spellbinding book about the time that she spent in the Karoo region of South Africa, to explore the ancestral lands that once belonged to an indigenous group called the /Xam. Throughout the nineteenth century the /Xam were persecuted and denied the right to live in their own territories. Their intricate language was entrusted to a German philologist in an extraordinary document called the Bleek-Lloyd Archive. This haunting book is about the importance of preserving cultures and langauges, the brutality of colonialism and the fate of those who were dispossessed.

Hugh Brody’s ‘Landscapes of Silence’ is a dazzling tapestry of  a book, covering his life from a childhood in England, to a kibbutz in Israel and the deep Canadian wilderness where he found his passion, and immersed himself in communities of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and Subarctic Canada. It is a book about silence, land and healing, which also reveals the devastating effects of colonialism on people and place.

Julia Blackburn is the author of ‘Timesong’ and ‘Threads: The Delicate Life of John Craske’, amongst many other titles. Hugh Brody is a renowned anthropologist, film maker and author.
