Description
We are thrilled to be hosting a very special launch event for Charlie Porter’s unmissable debut novel Nova Scotia House.
Already highly acclaimed for his non-fiction books What Artists Wear and Bring No Clothes, Porter now turns to fiction to tell an intimate story of the AIDS crisis and its aftermath, exploring love, sex, death, hope, and alternate modes of queer living jeopardised by the global AIDS pandemic.
Nova Scotia House is told entirely through the mind and memories of protagonist Johnny Grant, and travels between contemporary times and the early 1990s, in unnamed versions of London and New York. Johnny faces stark life decisions. Seeking answers, he looks back to his relationship with Jerry Field and how they made a life on their terms in Jerry’s flat: 1, Nova Scotia House.
This remarkable novel takes us to the heart of a relationship, a community, and an era. It is both a love story and a lament; bearing witness to the enduring pain of the AIDS pandemic and honouring the joys and creativity of queer life. Charlie proves to be a vibrant and necessary new voice in fiction.
Charlie will be in conversation with the wonderful Olivia Laing. Olivia is the author of many notable books, both fiction and non-fiction, including Crudo, The Lonely City, Funny Weather Everybody and The Garden Against Time.
Ticket price includes a glass of wine or soft drink.
