Carys Davies’ exquisite novel Clear proves yet again that she is a master of the short form. In captivating and polished prose she transports us to a remote Scottish island in the mid 19th century, where we meet Ivar, the sole occupant of the land. One day he happens upon an unconscious man on the beach. Newcomer Jonathan was initially sent to evict Ivar and claim the land for sheep grazing. However in time the men begin to forge a surprising and tentative bond despite their differences and lack of a common language.
A humane and tender exploration of difference and belonging, this is a book to savour.
