Description
We are delighted to be joined by one of our favourite travel writers Sophy Roberts to discuss her latest book A Training School for Elephants.
Sophy is the acclaimed author of The Lost Pianos of Siberia, and her latest book brings to life the bizarre and remarkable story of King Leopold II of Belgium’s attempt to plunder African resources in the 19th century. He had strangely, and ambitiously, decided that the key to cracking open the continent was its elephants — if only he could train them.
This book is everything we love best; a beautiful blend of travel-writing, history and encounters with memorable characters from the past. It is a deeply poignant tale of the elephants journey from India to the East African Coast and into the Congo, as Sophy retreads their footsteps and pieces together this long-forgotten expedition.
Sophy will be presenting this fascinating talk, alongside a slideshow of pictures from her research trip. We do hope that you will come and discover this long-lost piece of history with us.
