TALKS AT DAUNT BOOKS Tuesday 1st July at 7pm PATRICK FRENCH with A.N. WILSON In "The World Is What It Is", Patrick French has produced a luminous account of the enigmatic genius that is V.S Naipaul. He writes with great feeling for Naipaul’s formidable body of work, and real insight on his complicated private life. In this last respect, few punches are pulled, and this candour led Paul Theroux to call it "This astonishing biography." A.N. Wilson’s most recent book, "Winnie And Wolf", is the extraordinary story of the relationship between Winfred Wagner and Adolf Hitler. Thursday 10th July at 7pm JOHN SUCHET Following his wonderful fictional trilogy about Beethoven, "The Last Master", broadcaster John Suchet has now turned his attention to "The Treasures of Beethoven". He tells the stories behind the music, and highlights some of the most important events in Beethoven’s life by investigating the many items of memorabilia to be found in museums and collections around the world. Wednesday 16th July at 7pm JULIAN EVANS with BARNABY ROGERSON In "Semi Invisible Man", Julian Evans has produced a hugely enjoyable portrait of Norman Lewis. Works such as "The Honoured Society and Voices of The Old Sea" place him amongst the very finest writers of the Twentieth Century, yet he has been much overlooked. This affectionate portrait of of a very full life is sure to send new readers hurrying to read his works, and they will not be disappointed. Barnaby Rogerson is an author and owner of Eland Books, who publish many of Norman Lewis’ finest works. Tuesday 22nd July at 7pm JASON GOODWIN with BARBARA NADEL "The Bellini Card" is Jason Goodwin’s third novel featuring Yashim the eunuch detective. Kate Mosse describes Yashim as "A wonderfully seductive and original detective," and Goodwin has placed him against the rich backdrop of the Ottoman Empire in the 1830’s and ‘40’s. Barbara Nadel is the author of the Cetin Ikmen mysteries, all set in present-day Istanbul, a city superbly evoked, full of atmosphere and intrigue. Her latest novel, "Ashes to Ashes", is her first to be set in wartime London.
